Anti-malaria Crusade: UN Goodwill Ambassador At Star Building

Mandy Moore leading a delegation of international civil society organizations fighting malaria, met Prime Minister Philemon Yang on August 11.

 

The United Nations Goodwill Ambassador Against Malaria, Mandy Moore is leading a delegation of some international civil society organizations to Cameroon to evaluate the malaria situation in the country in order to lobby for more assistance to support ongoing government efforts. The UN Goodwill Ambassador who is also an American singer, songwriter, actress and fashion designer and some members of her delegation had a brief working session with Prime Minister Philemon Yang at the Star Building yesterday, August 11, 2011. She presented their mission to the Head of Government.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Mandy Moore said prominent organizations represented in her delegation were the UN Foundation and the Population Services International (PSI) for which she is also ambassador. She said the visit was to create more awareness in the use of treated mosquito bed nets in order to fight malaria. "We needed to see the experience so that when we go back to the US, we will ask for more funds to extend the project in order to provide universal coverage with bed nets," Mandy Moore said they have met many people and justified that "Bed nets have been proven to be the most cost effective tool to fight malaria."

Prime Minister Philemon Yang, while receiving the delegation, expressed the gratitude of government. He said malaria remains a serious problem in Cameroon and added that it is a always a pleasure whenever there is assistance to government efforts.

The Minister of Public Health, André Mama Fouda who accompanied the delegation to the Prime Minister's Office, described the visit as coming to boost government's efforts in fighting malaria through the massive distribution of treated mosquito bed nets. He said the distribution campaign will start in the weeks ahead and the support of donors will highly complement government efforts.
